Science Revision- Taken from post in May 2015
Quick recap:
Living Things
1.Livings can grow, respond to changes, die, reproduce, need air, food and water to survive.
2.Plants can make their own food but animals depend on others for food.
6.The animal groups are mammals, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and fish. (For characteristics, please look at Textbook Pg 46)
Poor conductors of heat do not allow heat to pass through them easily.
Science Revision- Plant parts
If you do spot any mistakes or you would like to bring up any points for discussion, please inform me when we are back in school.
Plant and their parts
1. Plants are living things and they are made up of many parts.
2. The parts of a plant are roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds. These parts combine to form a system.
3. Each plant part has a function.
4. These parts work together to help the plant make food, grow and reproduce.
Functions of Roots
1. Takes in water and mineral salts from the soil
2. Holds the plant firmly to the ground
Functions of Stem
1. Supports or holds up the branches and leaves to get sunlight
2. Hold the tree upright
3. Carries food, water and mineral salts to all parts of the plants
Function of Leaf
1. Makes food for the plant by trapping sunlight
2. They allow the plant to exchange gases with the surrounding air
Functions of Flower
1. Reproductive structure of a plant that enables the plant to bear fruits and seeds
2. Attract pollinators
Function of fruit
1. Contains and protects the seeds
Function of seed
1. Germinates to produce new plants
Answer: They are usually spread out so that they can get as much sunlight as possible to make food for the plant.
Leaves
Leaves make food for the plant by trapping light energy from the Sun.
There are tiny opening openings in the leaf called stomata to help plants take in and give out gases.
*Do learn how to label the parts of a leaf.
Stem
Some plants have stems that grow straight up and they are strong while some plants have weak stems that climb up other plants for support. Some plants creep along the ground.
Therefore, those plants with weak stem will climb higher up the support (if they are present like a straight stick) to support the leaves up to get sunlight to make food.
Some food is stored in the stems of the plants like potato, ginger and sugercane.
Roots
Some roots store food for the plant like carrot, turnip and sweet potato.
Though it is true that roots of most plants grow underground, some plants do have roots that grow above the ground to get more oxygen like orchid, mangroves.
Interesting facts:
Some red or purple leaves do contain chlorophyll (the green pigment in leaves that aids photosynthesis). It's just that they contain a higher percentage of other plant pigments which masks the small percentage of chlorophyll and cause them to appear red or purple.

Math worksheets on Multiplication and Fractions
As we went through Math revision yesterday, the pupils are still not accurate in their multiplication and fractions calculations.
I am posting 3 worksheets on them and will post the answers tomorrow.
Do download them and attempt the questions. If you do not have a printer, you may copy the questions on your foolscap. Please bring the worksheets on Monday.
As explained to the pupils, usually questions involving these calculations are part of questions and if their algorithm is wrong, it will affect the rest of the equations and a wrong answer will be attained, thus it is important that they get these algorithms correct.

Things to note on 12 October 2015
There is no homework today. However, the pupils were given a Math Revision Paper to bring home in case they need a break from their studying of composition writing. They may complete Sections B and C. It is not mandatory to complete them.
I have returned 3 EL revision papers and went through the answers with them. Pupils have been asked to file them into their EL files.
Composition Writing
1. Pupils must remember to write according to the theme and use at least 1 picture. I have reminded the pupils to highlight the theme and circle the pictures that they are using.
2. The bulk of the content must focus on the theme. Pupils have been advised to write in "1st party" - "I" if the theme indicates "you".
3. We went through what constitutes good content in a composition. The ideas must be interesting, details relevant and well linked. Logical ideas, too.
4. We went through the common mistakes in language among the pupils. Appropriate uses of vocabulary, punctuation, tenses, paragraphing, contractions are important.
5. Try not to write the events as a dream unless the theme is about a nightmare or a dream and not to use "inner voice/ devil/ angel in my mind" in your story. I have advised them to use "I was in a dilemma. I wondered, "Should I XXXXXX or XXXX?"
6. I went through the various introductions and conclusions that they can use in their compositions.
Remember that the conclusion must be reasonable and believable.
7. Ensure that your handwriting is neat and legible.
Listening comprehension
1. Listen carefully and check answers against second reading.
2. Read instructions especially for note-taking, if they require one-word answer or short answer.
3. Be considerate and be as quiet as possible in the course of the examination.

Thank you!
Dear parents and pupils of 4 Exemplary,
Today, the school held a celebration for the teachers- Teachers' Day Celebration.
I would like to thank all pupils and parents who have given me gifts and I would like to say that I am thankful to be teaching this group of pupils too. They have been very motivated, are always willing to try new things with me and they really are very endearing to me.
In the afternoon, the inter-class volleyball competition was held and the girls came in second. WELL DONE!👍 I am aware that there were tears shed and conflicts arose during the course of the competitions. I will resolve them when school reopens. ( I was in a meeting when the competitions were held.)Having said this, I would like the pupils in 4 Exemplary gradually becoming more open to take up new challenges, be it academic or sports pursuits, to step out of their comfort zone and enjoy themselves in these pursuits . When I encourage the pupils to join inter-class competitions as a team, I hope that they will appreciate teamwork and learn that at times, they need to consider the feelings of one another before making decisions, which I place more importance than winning. I truly believe that we learn better as a class.
Have a good rest and I will assign online tasks soon!☺ Remember the 5 questions on Science. I will go through the definitions on the words on Monday and please learn the words on the Spelling Bee list.
Then I will remember this,🍨! ;p
All of you have worked hard for CA2s. Do recharge during this school holidays and let's work together for SA2s.
Enjoy your school holidays and I will see you when school reopens.

Other notes on Science - Light
Reflectors on bicycles reflect light from the vehicles. In this way, drivers are able to see the cyclists on the roads. Reflectors can also be found on jogging shoes.
A mirror reflects light. Mirror can be arranged to create a path for light to help us see things that are out of our sight range. A mirror is not a source of light as it does not give off light. We can see our reflection in the mirror because the light from our surroundings falls on our body and is reflected on
to the mirror. The mirror with its smooth surface then reflects the light into our eyes.
The amount of light passing through a material or object can be measured using light sensor connected to a datalogger.
Notes for Science topic: Light
2) Light must be present for us to see. Without light, we cannot see. Thus we cannot see in the dark.
3) Objects that give off light are known as sources of light. There are two types, natural and artificial sources of light.
4) The Sun is our main source of light during the day.
5) The moon is not a source of light.
6) The moon looks bright at night because it reflects light from the Sun.
7) We can see sources of light because they give off light.
8) We can see objects that do not give off light when there is light shining on them. The light is then reflected from the object and enters our eyes.
9) We can see through an object clearly if it allows most of the light to pass through it. It is a transparent material.
10) We cannot see an object clearly if it allows only some light to pass through it. It is a translucent material.
11) We cannot see through an object at all if it does not allow any light to pass through it. It is known as an opaque material.
12) A shadow is formed when light is blocked by an opaque object.
- Refer to concept map on light and shadows
(I) How to make a shadow bigger
(II) How to make a shadow smaller
(III) What is sharpness?
(IV) What affects the shapes of shadows?
Answers for Science Process Skills
Worksheet 7
2. If he switches the lights on, the light will be reflected from his body to someone's eyes, thus people will know that someone is inside.
3. As opaque objects do not allow any light to pass through, people cannot see through the opaque mask, so they cannot identify him.
4. His vision will not improve. Sunglasses allow less light to pass through and into his eyes.
5. A light sensor was installed in the toy car.

Please revise your work for Mother Tongue examination tomorrow and rest early.
Do remember to bring your Science revision paper given out today to go through the answers tomorrow.
Tuesday, 25 August 2015
Things to note on 25 August 2015
There is no homework today.
Today I went through a summary of the topics and the key areas that they need to take note of when attempting the Math examination tomorrow.
Whole numbers
(i) Pupils need to read the questions carefully especially when the questions uses words like "___ tens", "____ hundreds" in their question.
(ii) Pupils need to revise the key terms like place value, value, "stands for".
(iii) Pupils need to read questions carefully especially questions stating "the missing number number or missing digit is".
(iv) They must be familiar with terms like product, quotient, remainders.
(v) We went through how to derive the largest possible number and smallest possible number when the number is rounded off to the nearest tens, hundreds or thousands etc.
Time
Pupils must remember to draw timelines for questions relating to time.
For 24 hour clock format, there are only 4 digits and 12 p.m. is 1200 and 12 a.m. is 0000 or 2400.
Pupils must remember not to add time with duration.
Decimals
Pupils must be familiar with tenths, hundredths and thousandths.
Pupils must remember how to convert fractions to decimals and vice versa.
They must know how to list the values on number lines.
Fractions
Pupils must remember to leave answers for fractions in simplest form unless otherwise stated.
They must decide if the problem sum is a plain measurement questions or fraction of a set question.
Heuristics questions (Fan-math)
Pupils have been advised to go through the questions in Fan-math especially the questions on model drawing (transfer questions).
They have been asked to draw models especially if the question requires them to compare among three or more objects, if the questions states "twice / three times as many as etc" and for questions which states "sharing or after Person X gives XX to Person Y". Reason being is that by drawing model, the problem should become clearer to solve. Without models, the pupils tend to miss out on certain units to be labelled.
There are other topics like Angles, Squares and Rectangle etc (refer to CA2 schedule) to be tested and as mentioned, they were briefed on what to take note on all the topics today.
Most importantly, the pupils need to read all questions carefully and remember to show all equations and workings. I have mentioned to them that for Math, there really is no shortcut to achieving good marks in this subject. Accuracy is most important.
Have a good rest today and remember to bring all necessary Mathematical instruments/ equipment to school. :O)

Things to note
Fair test
Independent variable is the factor or variable that we change in an experiment to test if they can affect the results of the experiment.
Dependent variable is the variable that we usually measure or it is the result that we look at the end of the experiment.
Usually for fair test, we will only change one independent variable. All other variables should remain the same.
For example of the aim of the experiment is to test if the type of soil affect the growth of the plant.
The only factor that changes (independent variable) is the type of soil. All other factors like amount of soil, type of plant etc must remain the same.
The results that we measure in both experiments is the growth of the plant and this is known as the dependent variable.
Data analysis (Graphs)
Please study the 2 axes of the graph carefully. Do draw dotted straight lines to read off the values as represented by the graphs. Remember to state units when necessary.
Answers for Fair Test WS
1) Presence of water(independent variable) and if seeds will germinate (dependent variable)
2) Amount of light (independent variable) and survival of fishes (dependent variable)
3) Change in temperature (independent variable) and rate of evaporation (dependent variable)
4) Presence of fertiliser (independent variable) and growth of flowering plant (dependent variable)
5) Material of parachute (independent variable) and distance the parachut takes to fall to the ground(dependent variable)
6) Presence of sunlight (independent variable) and growth of plant( dependent variable)
7) Surface area of leaves (independent variable) and amount of oxygen given out during photosynthesis (dependent variable)
8) Materials (independent variable) and Amount of light that passes through (dependent variable)
9) Type of soil (independent variable) and growth of plant (dependent variable)
10) Change in weights (independent variable) and how much an elastic band stretches
11) Height of ramp is the independent variable and the distance travelled by the car (independent variable). Only height of ramp can change.
Variable 1 and 2: Any 2 as stated below-
Length of ramp, material of ramp, size of toy car, type of toy car, material of toy car.
12) Variables that must be kept constant: Thickness of filter, material of filter, type of water plant
Independent variable for this experiment is the colour of filter and dependent variable is the number of bubbles given out.
13) *do not do the question on dissolved carbon dioxide
14) Variables that should be kept constant: Amount of fertiliser and type of soil.

(I) Did not read questions properly especially questions that requested them to round off their answers to nearest tenths, hundredths or etc. Thus the pupils detived the correct answers based on algorithm but they did not round off their answers.
(II) Some pupils are not able to convert "words" to decimals accurately. For example, 12 tenths= 1.2
(III) Some pupils are having problems understanding word problems involving fractions. As explained to them, they must decide if the question is purely a normal "measurement" question or "fraction of a set" question.

Things to note for Math
Decimals - Mathematics
Weaknesses
(1)Rounding off
Pupils tend to forget that when they are requested to round off to nearest tenths, they are required to write their answers to 1 decimal place even if the digit in tenths is "0".
For example, 1.95 rounded off to nearest tenths is 2.0. Not 2.
For example, 1.998 rounded off to nearest hundredths is 2.00. Not 2 or 2.0.
They need to read carefully what they are requested to round off their decimals to.
(2) For money, pupils must remember to leave their answers with 2 decimal answers , unless it's a whole number. Like $2.80, not $2.8.
(3) In long division, some pupils wrote their answers as 0.56R3. They must not leave their answers as such. They have been reminded to add .0 to the dividend to obtain the quotient.
If the pupils is requested to round off their quotient to nearest tenths, they only need to work up to the hundredths.

Quick Recap for Science
Quick recap:
Living Things
1.Livings can grow, respond to changes, die, reproduce, need air, food and water to survive.
2.Plants can make their own food but animals depend on others for food.
Poor conductors of heat do not allow heat to pass through them easily.
