Things to note
Fair test
Independent variable is the factor or variable that we change in an experiment to test if they can affect the results of the experiment.
Dependent variable is the variable that we usually measure or it is the result that we look at the end of the experiment.
Usually for fair test, we will only change one independent variable. All other variables should remain the same.
For example of the aim of the experiment is to test if the type of soil affect the growth of the plant.
The only factor that changes (independent variable) is the type of soil. All other factors like amount of soil, type of plant etc must remain the same.
The results that we measure in both experiments is the growth of the plant and this is known as the dependent variable.
Data analysis (Graphs)
Please study the 2 axes of the graph carefully. Do draw dotted straight lines to read off the values as represented by the graphs. Remember to state units when necessary.
Answers for Fair Test WS
1) Presence of water(independent variable) and if seeds will germinate (dependent variable)
2) Amount of light (independent variable) and survival of fishes (dependent variable)
3) Change in temperature (independent variable) and rate of evaporation (dependent variable)
4) Presence of fertiliser (independent variable) and growth of flowering plant (dependent variable)
5) Material of parachute (independent variable) and distance the parachut takes to fall to the ground(dependent variable)
6) Presence of sunlight (independent variable) and growth of plant( dependent variable)
7) Surface area of leaves (independent variable) and amount of oxygen given out during photosynthesis (dependent variable)
8) Materials (independent variable) and Amount of light that passes through (dependent variable)
9) Type of soil (independent variable) and growth of plant (dependent variable)
10) Change in weights (independent variable) and how much an elastic band stretches
11) Height of ramp is the independent variable and the distance travelled by the car (independent variable). Only height of ramp can change.
Variable 1 and 2: Any 2 as stated below-
Length of ramp, material of ramp, size of toy car, type of toy car, material of toy car.
12) Variables that must be kept constant: Thickness of filter, material of filter, type of water plant
Independent variable for this experiment is the colour of filter and dependent variable is the number of bubbles given out.
13) *do not do the question on dissolved carbon dioxide
14) Variables that should be kept constant: Amount of fertiliser and type of soil.
