Other notes on Science - Light
Reflectors on bicycles reflect light from the vehicles. In this way, drivers are able to see the cyclists on the roads. Reflectors can also be found on jogging shoes.
A mirror reflects light. Mirror can be arranged to create a path for light to help us see things that are out of our sight range. A mirror is not a source of light as it does not give off light. We can see our reflection in the mirror because the light from our surroundings falls on our body and is reflected on
to the mirror. The mirror with its smooth surface then reflects the light into our eyes.
The amount of light passing through a material or object can be measured using light sensor connected to a datalogger.
Notes for Science topic: Light
2) Light must be present for us to see. Without light, we cannot see. Thus we cannot see in the dark.
3) Objects that give off light are known as sources of light. There are two types, natural and artificial sources of light.
4) The Sun is our main source of light during the day.
5) The moon is not a source of light.
6) The moon looks bright at night because it reflects light from the Sun.
7) We can see sources of light because they give off light.
8) We can see objects that do not give off light when there is light shining on them. The light is then reflected from the object and enters our eyes.
9) We can see through an object clearly if it allows most of the light to pass through it. It is a transparent material.
10) We cannot see an object clearly if it allows only some light to pass through it. It is a translucent material.
11) We cannot see through an object at all if it does not allow any light to pass through it. It is known as an opaque material.
12) A shadow is formed when light is blocked by an opaque object.
- Refer to concept map on light and shadows
(I) How to make a shadow bigger
(II) How to make a shadow smaller
(III) What is sharpness?
(IV) What affects the shapes of shadows?
Answers for Science Process Skills
Worksheet 7
2. If he switches the lights on, the light will be reflected from his body to someone's eyes, thus people will know that someone is inside.
3. As opaque objects do not allow any light to pass through, people cannot see through the opaque mask, so they cannot identify him.
4. His vision will not improve. Sunglasses allow less light to pass through and into his eyes.
5. A light sensor was installed in the toy car.

Things to note on 25 August 2015
There is no homework today.
Today I went through a summary of the topics and the key areas that they need to take note of when attempting the Math examination tomorrow.
Whole numbers
(i) Pupils need to read the questions carefully especially when the questions uses words like "___ tens", "____ hundreds" in their question.
(ii) Pupils need to revise the key terms like place value, value, "stands for".
(iii) Pupils need to read questions carefully especially questions stating "the missing number number or missing digit is".
(iv) They must be familiar with terms like product, quotient, remainders.
(v) We went through how to derive the largest possible number and smallest possible number when the number is rounded off to the nearest tens, hundreds or thousands etc.
Time
Pupils must remember to draw timelines for questions relating to time.
For 24 hour clock format, there are only 4 digits and 12 p.m. is 1200 and 12 a.m. is 0000 or 2400.
Pupils must remember not to add time with duration.
Decimals
Pupils must be familiar with tenths, hundredths and thousandths.
Pupils must remember how to convert fractions to decimals and vice versa.
They must know how to list the values on number lines.
Fractions
Pupils must remember to leave answers for fractions in simplest form unless otherwise stated.
They must decide if the problem sum is a plain measurement questions or fraction of a set question.
Heuristics questions (Fan-math)
Pupils have been advised to go through the questions in Fan-math especially the questions on model drawing (transfer questions).
They have been asked to draw models especially if the question requires them to compare among three or more objects, if the questions states "twice / three times as many as etc" and for questions which states "sharing or after Person X gives XX to Person Y". Reason being is that by drawing model, the problem should become clearer to solve. Without models, the pupils tend to miss out on certain units to be labelled.
There are other topics like Angles, Squares and Rectangle etc (refer to CA2 schedule) to be tested and as mentioned, they were briefed on what to take note on all the topics today.
Most importantly, the pupils need to read all questions carefully and remember to show all equations and workings. I have mentioned to them that for Math, there really is no shortcut to achieving good marks in this subject. Accuracy is most important.
Have a good rest today and remember to bring all necessary Mathematical instruments/ equipment to school. :O)

Homework on 11 Aug 2015
(1) Math revision Paper T3R2 (Complete sections B and C)
2) Science WS on Fair test
3) Parents pls sign on Math Review 5
Things to note
Fair test
Independent variable is the factor or variable that we change in an experiment to test if they can affect the results of the experiment.
Dependent variable is the variable that we usually measure or it is the result that we look at the end of the experiment.
Usually for fair test, we will only change one independent variable. All other variables should remain the same.
For example of the aim of the experiment is to test if the type of soil affect the growth of the plant.
The only factor that changes (independent variable) is the type of soil. All other factors like amount of soil, type of plant etc must remain the same.
The results that we measure in both experiments is the growth of the plant and this is known as the dependent variable.
Data analysis (Graphs)
Please study the 2 axes of the graph carefully. Do draw dotted straight lines to read off the values as represented by the graphs. Remember to state units when necessary.
Answers for Fair Test WS
1) Presence of water(independent variable) and if seeds will germinate (dependent variable)
2) Amount of light (independent variable) and survival of fishes (dependent variable)
3) Change in temperature (independent variable) and rate of evaporation (dependent variable)
4) Presence of fertiliser (independent variable) and growth of flowering plant (dependent variable)
5) Material of parachute (independent variable) and distance the parachut takes to fall to the ground(dependent variable)
6) Presence of sunlight (independent variable) and growth of plant( dependent variable)
7) Surface area of leaves (independent variable) and amount of oxygen given out during photosynthesis (dependent variable)
8) Materials (independent variable) and Amount of light that passes through (dependent variable)
9) Type of soil (independent variable) and growth of plant (dependent variable)
10) Change in weights (independent variable) and how much an elastic band stretches
11) Height of ramp is the independent variable and the distance travelled by the car (independent variable). Only height of ramp can change.
Variable 1 and 2: Any 2 as stated below-
Length of ramp, material of ramp, size of toy car, type of toy car, material of toy car.
12) Variables that must be kept constant: Thickness of filter, material of filter, type of water plant
Independent variable for this experiment is the colour of filter and dependent variable is the number of bubbles given out.
13) *do not do the question on dissolved carbon dioxide
14) Variables that should be kept constant: Amount of fertiliser and type of soil.

Homework on 5 August 2015
Tuesday, 4 August 2015
Homework on 4 Aug 2015
1) EL revision paper T3R3
Things to note:
1)The pupils will be taking a Math Performance task this week. They have been informed since Monday to revise the following topics, Angles, Time, Perpendicular and Parallel Lines and Area and Perimeter. There is no weighting for this test.
2) Today, the pupils were given 3 quizzes on Math (Fractions and Decimals).
Commonly made errors:
(I) Did not read questions properly especially questions that requested them to round off their answers to nearest tenths, hundredths or etc. Thus the pupils detived the correct answers based on algorithm but they did not round off their answers.
(II) Some pupils are not able to convert "words" to decimals accurately. For example, 12 tenths= 1.2
(III) Some pupils are having problems understanding word problems involving fractions. As explained to them, they must decide if the question is purely a normal "measurement" question or "fraction of a set" question.
